Guided Anchorage Day Hikes, Alaska
Come hike in the Chugach Mountains, the most accessible wilderness to Anchorage! Trips start and finish from Downtown or your Anchorage hotel lobby.
Explore unique coastal alpine mountains with a naturalist hiking guide who tailors the hike to your fitness level. We seek out & discuss the flora, fauna, geology, animal tracks and life zones of the habitat. Some of the sights spotted: Alaska Range, Mt. McKinley, Cook Inlet, Turnagain Arm, Glaciated Volcanoes & wildlife: moose, bear, dall sheep, marmot, arctic ground squirrels, hares, red fox, migratory birds & mountain runners. Your fun and friendly guide gives you the opportunity to: Nibble on edible leaves, flowers & berries; Explore traditional & contemporary herb lore; Identify bird song & animal behaviors; and enjoy stories about Alaskan & Native Peoples history.
Our 1/2 & Full day hiking excursions include:
Transportation from Anchorage, rain gear (if necessary), trail snack & water, interpretation, bear protection and a knowledgeable naturalist. Each trip is custom tailored to the participants desire & fitness levels. Most of our hikes start from the Glenn Alps Trailhead; however, trailheads and trip locations will be modified based on conditions, safety, level of activity, length of trip time and/or pre-arranged special interests (i.e. birding, photography, whale migration & berry picking).
Hiking Options:
Valley Hike: Little O'Malley Peak, Rabbit Lakes, Willawaw Lakes, Prospect Heights, Powerline Pass, South Fork Campbell Creek are several options depending on your overall group age, fitness levels & desires. We discuss your interest and select a hike suitable for you based on the previous criteria. Alaska's trails can be Moderate to Difficult with graded, maintained gravel and dirt with rocks. OPtions include, out-and-back or loops and many hikes focus on exploring the sub-alpine to alpine ecology transitions. Mileage and elevation gain is dependent on pace, hike selected and can range anywhere from 200-1300ft to 1-10 miles. Some hiking experience and/or moderate physical fitness is recommended. This is a great family trip!
Climb a mountain: Flattop or Little O’Malley Peak: are popular "first mountains to climb" for fit, adventurous people of all ages. We hike up to a 1300 ft elevation gain with 3 miles distance round trip. These trails are difficult with steep inclines, switchbacks, maintained & unmaintained gravel trails & stairs. Both trips get you sweating & breathing the fresh clean alpine air. On Flattop: the upper 400 ft has scrambling & unmaintained rock field crossing. Hiking experience is recommended. Consider these options as a full day hike for those who want a more leisurely pace.
