BYRON GLACIER, PORTAGE, AK

We have been guiding on this magnificent Glacier since 2003 and we love sharing this Valley with rugged, fit hikers. The Byron Glacier is located in the Portage Valley, about 20 minutes South of Girdwood and an hour from Anchorage. From the trailhead, the approach is 1 mile of graveled trail to a permanent avalanche debris pile. From here we leave the trail and begin our ascent of rugged talus walking, snow and river crossings, and about 1200’ elevation gain to the toe of the glacier. (Our guides know where the secret Ice caves occasionally form!)

On the Glacier

At the Glacier edge we rope up with harnesses, crampons and helmets to gain the upper reaches of the glacier via climber’s right side of the Valley (avoiding the newly formed seracs). The Byron Glacier has receded and changed dramatically in the past few years (as most glaciers have) so, come see the action. This hike is a chance to explore a unique, dynamic and rugged glacier valley with an experienced and skilled glacier guide.
