TRIP DETAILS
Trips include all personal climbing equipment, (boots, helmets, harness, crampons, Ice tools), friendly skilled climbing guide, 4:1 ratio, all group climbing gear and interpretive natural history, ecology and climbing discussions. Snacks and water are also provided, but bring a lunch.
Please wear comfortable warm clothes and dress in non-cotton layers (fleece jacket, ski jacket/pants, 2x gloves, wool/fleece hat, muff ). Be sure to bring a daypack, lunch and a camera.
WINTER ICE CLIMBING DETAILS
- No experience necessary
- This is a 6-7 hour excursion
- Meeting in Anchorage or Girdwood
- Advanced reservations are recommended
- A detailed gear list is provided upon booking (Daypack, lunch, camera, hat & gloves, etc)
- Climbers are required to fill out a Climbing Application and sign our waiver
- Trip minimums and maximums 2 and 10

BEGINNER ICE COURSE DETAILS
Dates: 4 Saturdays in January
Goal: To become a competent ice climber.
No climbing experience is necessary for this class and opportunities to increase knowledge and ability will continue with each class in the series. The cost is $750 for all 4 days and includes all gear and a 1:4 instructor to climber ratio. There is a three person minimum and a six person maximum for each class. All necessary gear is provided.
Locations: TBD, Seward Highway, Portage and/or Hunter Creek.
- Day 1------
We start by learning general climbing technique while top-roping an easy ice route. Focus is on efficiency of placing and removing ice tools and proper crampon technique. - Day 2------
We continue with more basic technique with emphasis on "Alaskan style" decision making, route finding and planning. - Day 3------
We'll spend some time Racking gear as the Second and, if you are ready, following a multi pitch route. Different methods of Rappelling down. - Day 4------
Ice Screw placement and basic Anchor construction. V-Threads & Simple Self-Rescue scenarios are practiced. - A detailed gear list is provided upon booking

INTERMEDIATE ICE COURSE- DETAILS
Dates: 4 Saturdays in February
Goal: To become a solid follower.
Previous Ice climbing experience is necessary for this class and opportunities to increase knowledge and ability will continue with each class in the series. The cost is $750 for all 4 days and includes all gear and a 1:4 instructor to climber ratio. There is a three person minimum and a six person maximum for each class. All necessary gear is provided.
Locations: TBD, Seward Highway, Portage and/or Hunter Creek.
- Day 1------
We start by reviewing general climbing technique and following a moderate multi-pitch ice route. Focus is on efficiency of placing and removing ice protection as well as ERNEST top-rope anchor construction and belay maintenance. - Day 2------
More anchor construction and the basics of following multi-pitch routes in good style. Focus is on technique, anchor change-over efficiency and endurance. Lead Theory.- Day 3------
A multi pitch climb, then simple and practical Self-Rescue scenarios are discussed and practiced. Various Rappelling techniques.- Day 4------
Mock leading with Ice Screw placement and basic Anchor construction for the leader. V-Threads & Simple Self-Rescue scenarios are practiced. - Day 3------
Winter Ice Climbing near Anchorage
Alaska is the best year-around place to learn Ice Climbing! Alaska's water ice flows are always consistent and local venues offer rugged but quick, scenic approaches. All climbing gear is included.

You are fitted with: Koflach or Scarpa climbing boots, crampons, harness, helmet and ice tools.
Our experienced and certified guides are risk management professionals, we teach everything from the basics to advanced ice climbing techniques. The day is an engaging, fun and challenging experience in the Alaskan wilderness.

BEGINNER WINTER ICE CLIMBING COURSE
Why not learn something new this winter?
Throughout the Winter Season, a series of Beginner Ice Climbing Classes will be offered to Alaskans. Classes will be taught by Senior AP Guides. This Beginner series is held on Saturdays in January. The class is designed to help you progress as an ice climber over the winter. The fundamentals are covered including (but not limited to): knots, terminology and voice commands, knowing your gear, proper tool and crampon use, climbing body positioning and Alaskan risk management decision making. Seconding a pitch, racking gear, rappelling and anchors are all covered over the 4 days. As always we tailor the curriculum to your experience and skill level.
All climbers are fitted with plastic mountaineering boots, crampons, harness, helmet and ice tools.

This intermediate seminar is designed to take your existing ice climbing skills to the next level. Knowing how to place screws, rack efficiently and build top-rope anchors are necessary skills to progress as an Ice climber. These skills and more are covered in our Intermediate Ice Seminar. All necessary gear is provided, or bring your own. The maximum student-instructor ratio is 4:1.
